$86 million HMAS Creswell Project Supports Local Jobs

The Parliamentary Secretary for Defence, Senator David Feeney, welcomed the opening of new facilities at HMAS Creswell in Jervis Bay.
The $86 million HMAS Creswell Redevelopment Project has created in the order of 2,400 jobs throughout the construction phase.
New classrooms, an auditorium, meeting rooms, a computer laboratory and classroom and a finishing kitchen were built at Geelong House.
More student apartments and new office accommodation and recreation facilities have been built at Cerberus House.
This brings the student accommodation capacity at HMAS Creswell to more than 380 units. A new accommodation building, Griffiths House, provides more than 30 rooms.
These facilities will be used by new entry officer trainees, Senior and Junior sailors, and officer career course students.
“This is a fantastic outcome for the Royal Australian Navy. It’s vital that our Australian Defence Force personnel learn and train in world-class facilities,” Senator Feeney said.
“This major redevelopment at HMAS Creswell has also created more than 2,400 jobs. That’s something that the Labor Gillard Government is proud of.”
Federal Member for Fraser, Andrew Leigh, added that “these new state of the art facilities for Defence personnel were built with the environment in mind.”
“Energy efficient lighting, building orientation, solar heating and recycled water have all been used to save water and energy,” Mr Leigh said.
“This project is another example of the Gillard Government supporting our Defence community and supporting jobs.”
Building works were sympathetic to the heritage design of the former Geelong House (circa 1915) and the heritage listed Cerberus House (circa 1915) which underwent a major restoration.
The facilities at the Navy’s School of Survivability and Ship Safety, Training Facility – East include a Dynamic Leak Stop Repair Training unit, Standard and Advanced fire fighting simulators, Simulator Control Room and Section Bases.
A new waterfront Survival at Sea classroom incorporating a demonstration area, amenities and staff office was completed this month. A new armoury was also completed in June 2011.
Water, power, sewer, fire mains, communications, street lighting and drainage infrastructure was also upgraded throughout Creswell.
Work on a new gymnasium is scheduled for completion in late 2011. The facility includes a 25 metre indoor pool, multi-purpose gymnasium, cardio fitness room and weights room.
