"Lucky" to find a way home
2 October 2010
HMAS Success’ (CMDR A. Rayner) resident rescued fisherman affectionately known
as “Lucky” is now on his way back home. After spending 3 days onboard Success
and winning the hearts of several crew members it was a sad morning when the Ship
rendezvoused with Indonesian patrol boat KRI Sigurot (LCDR Mastur) to handover
Lucky for his return to Kalimantan.
For the older crew members of Success the rendezvous with Sigurot was a blast from the past with the Indonesian patrol boat being ex-HMAS Assail, an Attack Class Patrol Boat decommissioned and handed to the Indonesian navy in 1985. For a vessel of 42 years of age she had been kept in wonderful condition and was a fitting link for the handover.
Executive Officer of HMAS Success, LCDR Mark Shelvey, conducted the handover on Sigurot and was assured that Lucky would be well taken care of and returned to his home as soon as possible. The crew of Success banded together and raised A$700 along with a huge donation of clothing to set Lucky on his way. He is looking forward to getting home and being with his family and he will be remembered fondly on Success”.
Success now continues its South East Asia deployment in company with Tobruk, Arunta and Toowoomba before conducting Exercise Bersama Padu.
