2010 Christmas Message from Governor-General Quentin Bryce

As commander-in-Chief of the ADF I extend my most sincere season’s greetings and congratulations to all sailors and officers of the RAN for your dedicated efforts and achievements throughout 2010.
This year, at home and abroad, ashore and at sea, the Navy has continued to serve Australia and our people with the highest levels of professionalism, honour and compassion. The implementation of New Generation Navy has also embodied a fresh spirit of camaraderie and pride within all ranks – a reflection of a modern and progressive Navy renowned and respected internationally.
In April, I had the honour to present the Gloucester Cup to HMAS Newcastle for maintaining the highest standards of maritime efficiency in the fleet. Newcastle’s disciplined and dedicated crew should be proud of this fine achievement. I also had the opportunity to meet the crews of HMA Ships Yarra and Huon in July while visiting Vanuatu for its 30th Anniversary of Independence celebrations. Both crews exemplified the finest traditions of our Navy, while fostering goodwill and friendship with Australia’s regional neighbours.
For those of you deployed or operating many miles away from family and loved ones this Christmas, I want to assure you that your sacrifice does not go unnoticed. As a nation, we are humbled by your devotion to duty, your commitment to service and I look forward to your safe return to home shores.
To the sailors and officers of the RAN, on behalf of all Australians, Michael and I wish you and your families a joyous Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Our thoughts are with you always.
