723 Squadron flying for Relay for Life
17 March 2010
723 Squadron have adopted Relay for Life as their nominated charity this year. The 200 strong Squadron are busy registering team members in this year’s seventh Relay for Life event, taking place at the Nowra Showground between 10.00 am Saturday 27th March and 10.00 am Sunday 28th March.
“We were particularly attracted to Relay for Life as our adopted charity since cancer strikes indiscriminately and affects everyone – it could be a colleague, a wife, a partner, one of our children, or a parent, an in-law, or a grandparent”, commented 723 Squadron, Commanding Officer, Commander Don Dezentje. “This is a charity we could all get behind and support as we would all like to look forward to a world without cancer”.
Charity Officer, Lieutenant James Cosham is busy registering team members and encouraging colleagues to organise fund-raising events and sell raffle tickets for the wonderful prizes on offer this year, “We are late into the game this year but hoping for a good representation at this year’s event and will be learning from this event to gear up for 2011 and we will be fund-raising throughout the year” said James Cosham.
“Having been to one of the most informative Team Information Nights, I realise we have a lot to do to get ready but the spirit is high amongst team members and I’m sure we will all have a rewarding and moving time being part of this amazing community event” commented LEUT Cosham.
723 Squadron is one of three Fleet Air Arm Squadrons at HMAS Albatross and provides initial rotary training for Navy Pilots, Observers and Aircrewmen. The AS350BA Squirrel helicopter is a single-engine, Instrument Flying (IF) capable helicopter, that the Navy utilises to introduce Navy aircrew to helicopter operations and maritime warfare, while also providing general support to the wider Navy. The Squadron is also the home of the Navy Squirrel Pairs Display Team. Importantly, it provides many engineering personnel with their first chance of plying their trade on rotary aircraft.
The Navy encourages its members to be involved in the community in which they are stationed and has a proud history of supporting community initiatives, and welcoming the community to join in events at HMAS Albatross.
