About Navy Boot Camp

Boot Camp enables students to 'try before you buy'. It will challenge the individual and give them the right information to decide if Navy is the right career path for them. Boot Camp will be held from 28 November to 1 December 2011.

Thirty positions are offered to students (years 10-12) to participate. They must answer questions covering personal qualities, career goals, and Navy. Positions are extremely competitive with in excess of 100 applications received from students in the South Eastern, Gippsland, Frankston and Mornington Peninsula regions. The camp is run at no cost to students or their schools to ensure an equal opportunity to share in the experience.

Boot Camp is four days duration and students experience many of the daily requirements of Navy personnel while under training. Activities include:

  • Marching and Drill instruction
  • RAN Swim Test
  • Fire Fighting and Damage Control simulations at the School of Ships Survivability and Safety
  • Survival at Sea training in Hanns Inlet
  • Team building activities including the Low Ropes course and the Mud Run.

This typifies the training all sailors in the RAN must complete. Some activities are more challenging than others, and emphasis is placed on team work and assisting your ship mates.

Students arrive confident they will be up to the challenge. They soon find out that there is at least one component they struggle with, whether it's communal living, making their bed without fitted sheets, early starts, physical challenges, or being away from their family, friend or even their play station.
