Assail Three is the third of six crews which form Assail Division. Based in Darwin, Assail Three is one of six rotational crews which shares responsibility for Armidale Class Patrol Boats (ACPBs), HMA Ships Pirie, Maitland, Ararat and Broome - the ACPBs that make up the Assail Division.

Assail Three officially formed up to undertake ACPB platform training on 29 May 2006. Assail Three initially embarked as the first crew of HMAS Ararat in August 2006 conducting operational training before Commissioning Ararat in Docklands Melbourne on the 10 November 2006

Assail Three conducted its first rotation under the multi-crewing regime for in January 2006 when the Crew handed over responsibility for HMA Ship Ararat to Assail Two.

Since completing Crew training ashore and at sea Assail Three primary tasking has been as part of the ADF's domestic maritime security activities conducted under Operation Resolute, providing vital border protection against illegal fishing and people smuggling as part of the whole-of-government efforts to protect Australia 's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). In this endeavour Assail Three has embarked in HMA Ships Pirie and Broome.
