Aussie Sailor gets Hawaiian Honeymoon
28 Jun 2010
As HMAS Warramunga berthed in Hawaii’s Pearl Harbour for Exercise Rim Of the Pacific (RIMPAC 2010), uniformed personnel gathered to greet the ships company which had just made the long transit from Perth, Western Australia.
Amongst the group of Australian and United States officers and sailors on the wharf, a sea of black, white and grey, one figure sported a flash of colour.
She was in a cheery sun dress and waited patiently for lines to be secured and one special sailor to appear on the gangway.
Tracey Hobden was waiting for her new husband Daniel so they could start their honeymoon.
Leading Seaman Combat Information Systems sailor Daniel Hobden and his wife had just one week together after their wedding in May this year before Warramunga sailed. So, Tracey took a flight to Hawaii and Daniel secured leave during the Harbour Phase of Exercise RIMPAC so they can take a short honeymoon before the exercise proper begins.
“We’ll spend a week island-hopping throughout Hawaii before I return to Warramunga for the at-sea phase of the Exercise,” Daniel said.
For now, RIMPAC will take a back seat to the honeymoon and the couple plan to see the sights and share some time together before Daniel resumes his job aboard.
“I’m very excited to have the chance to bring Tracey over here so we can have our honeymoon,” said Daniel.
Tracey, who has now moved from Canberra to Perth to join Daniel, is happy for her husband to continue his Navy career.
“It’s something he loves so if he is happy, so am I,” Tracey said.
RIMPAC 10 will be held in the Hawaiian operating area in and around the islands of Hawaii from 23rd June until 1st August. As well as HMA Ships Warramunga, Newcastle and Kanimbla, Navy is providing Clearance Divers and Sea King helicopters from 817 Squadron. Soldiers from Townville’s 2 Royal Australian Regiment will participate and the Airforce is providing a command element and AP 3-C Orion aircraft.
