Ballarat Personnel brave the Bermuda Triangle
11 August 2009 By LEUT Jemma Power
Some call it the Bermuda Triangle, some the Devils triangle – either way it is an area of ocean subject to myths, rumour and warnings to either enter with caution or simply avoid at all costs. Rumours about unexplained loss of aircraft and vessels surfaced in the 1950s and have entered popular culture with various explanations for the disappearance of the craft and their occupants. These explanations have ranged from super natural to more natural sources such as human error or the appearance of large gas bubbles that have enveloped ships.
Ballarat’s command team, undeterred by such rumour and innuendo threw caution to the wind and brought Ballarat to a halt in the triangle to take advantage of the warm Caribbean weather for a Swim Exercise (SwimEx).
Despite all the tall stories surrounding the ‘mysterious’ waters of the Bermuda Triangle, crew members were keen to hit the water and enjoyed this pause in their journey and their time in Ballarat’s ‘Caribbean Pool’.
