Bunbury to the rescue

18 December 2003

The Navy certainly keeps its eye on the environment.

Only three months ago HMAS Bunbury (II) (LCDR Andy Schroder) rescued two small turtles from a drifting ghost net. Now she’s done it again.

While patrolling north of Bathurst and Melville Islands, Bunbury’s sharp-eyed lookout, LSBM Adam Furphy, spotted a floating net.

On hauling the net inboard, two large green turtles, each weighing approximately 40 kg, were found, successfully cut from the net and freed.
