Clearance Divers at RIMPAC 2010
19 Jul 2010
It was stage diving of a different kind for some of our Australian divers off the coast of Pearl Harbor this week. Using the United States Naval Support ship Navajo, our Underwater Battle Damage Repair divers stood on a metal ‘stage’ and were lowered into the ocean to inspect a tug boat that had been sunk just prior to the start of RIMPAC.
They are working with US divers and the US Coast Guard divers for this part of the exercise. Our Mine Counter Measure divers, also working in the same area, located specially planted mines and raised them using a giant orange balloon (inflatable buoy). When the balloon resurfaced, it was towed about 7 kilometres to shore and then recovered on the beach. The divers have also had the chance to do some fast roping from helos.
On a separate note, special kudos to the divers for coming in second place overall during the RIMPAC sporting comp.
