Close Shave at HMAS ALBATROSS as part of Movember-fest
30 November 2007
Movember - the month formerly known as November- has resulted in hangars full of hirsute men at HMAS Albatross as teams from 805 and 723 Squadrons and Training Authority Aviation downed razors to raise funds for men's health issues.
An international event, the start of Movember sees clean shaven guys from Spain to Canada to New Zealand pledge to devote the remainder of the month to fostering facial hair that would do David Boon proud.
It's not just an excuse to abandon daily grooming regimes, Movembers three main aims are to: encourage a change in men's "she'll be right" attitude to health, raise funds for key men's health issues including prostate cancer and depression and to make male health fun.
Fun was certainly at the forefront when the 805 entrants battled it out for the title of Mr Movember. 805 had a head start on the other Albatross contenders, giving up their morning shave in October in order to be a bit more presentable for the Squadron Ball.
The gala judging took place in the 805 hangar and the guys certainly knew how to cut up a catwalk as they paraded before the judges, PO Dianne Rowan, LEUT Chastelle Griffiths and Dallas McMaugh.
It was a close shave but David Woods was presented with the much coveted Mr Movember Sash. The Sleaziest 70's mo winner was Alan Reader, Stafford Lester won the Most Colourful category, patriotically adorning his mo in Squadron colours, the No-Mo winner was Paul Geutjes who won by the lack of a whisker and the Mo Money prize for the biggest fundraiser was Shaun Megahey who raised $200.00. Highly Recommended was Nigel Porter for his hair-raising resemblance to Chopper Read.
AB Josephine Melville was the MO sister who organised this successful event and all up the Squadron raised more than $900.
