Lieutenant Kylie Beumer, RAN
Lieutenant Kylie Beumer, RAN joined the Royal Australian Navy in January 1997 as a Midshipman at the Australian Defence Force Academy. She commenced her Seaman Officer training in January 1999, before graduating in December that year with a Bachelor of Science majoring Physics and Oceanography.
In 2000 and 2001 LEUT Beumer continued her Seaman Officer training with postings to HMA Ships Anzac, Whyalla, Melville and Melbourne, deploying with Melbourne to the Solomon Islands in 2002 for Operation TREK. She attained her Bridge Watchkeeping Certificate in early 2003 and remained with the ship as an Officer of the Watch, deploying to the Arabian Gulf for Operation SLIPPER duties. In late 2003 she left HMAS Melbourne and joined HMAS Kanimbla, once again deploying to the Arabian Gulf in 2004 during the Iraq conflict for Operations BASTILLE, FALCONER and CATALYST.
LEUT Beumer completed Minor War Vessel XO Designate Course in late 2004 and rejoined HMAS Whyalla in the role of Executive Officer (XO). During her tenure as XO, Whyalla completed a highly successful South Pacific deployment, Mission Readiness Workup and numerous Operation RELEX II patrols which culminated in Whyalla being awarded the Kelly Shield for best Patrol Boat performance in 2004.
In 2006/2007 LEUT Beumer posted to Joint Logistics Command in Melbourne where she ran the Operation ANODE (Solomon Islands), then Operation SLIPPER (Afghanistan) desks. Concurrently she managed ADF postal services for all overseas operations and received a Commander Joint Logistics Commendation for her efforts. In January 2008 LEUT Beumer moved to Darwin and joined the Current Operations Branch at Headquarters Northern Command (HQNORCOM) where her principal role was the programming and management of ADF maritime assets Force Assigned to Operation RESOLUTE.
During her time at HQNORCOM LEUT Beumer was selected for Command of an Armidale Class Patrol Boat crew. After completing Minor War Vessel CO Designate Course, LEUT Beumer assumed Command of Assail Four in December 2009. Since that time she has completed a Mission Readiness Workup and conducted Op RESOLUTE patrols in HMA Ships Broome and Maitland which have included numerous Suspected Irregular Entry Vessel apprehensions and long haul tasks to Christmas Island.
Highlights of LEUT Beumer’s time in Command include hosting several VIPs at sea, such as Prime Minister Julia Gillard, The Honorary Bronwyn Bishop, the East Timorese Secretary of State and the Chief of the East Timorese Defence Force, as well as hosting ASSAIL FOUR family members and friends during a Families Day Cruise in Darwin Harbour.
LEUT Beumer grew up throughout Australia and in Washington D.C. but calls Townsville, Queensland home. An avid world traveller she enjoys international cuisine and foreign films, and loves catching up with family and friends. LEUT Beumer keeps active playing touch, hiking, climbing, snorkelling and scuba diving, and never sails without her sea kayak onboard. Her passions are adventure and her blue Burmese cat Frank.
