Lieutenant Commander Shane Doolin, RAN
Lieutenant Commander Shane Doolin, RAN joined the RAN in 1990 and attended the Australian Defence Force Academy. He then conducted Seaman Officer training, which included time in HMAS Torrens, Ipswich (II) and Canberra (II), and after becoming an Officer of the Watch in Canberra he joined the submarine arm in 1996.
LCDR Doolin has served in a variety of RAN submarines, in positions that included Torpedo Officer, Navigator, Sonar Officer, Operations Officer and Executive Officer. His time in the Australian Submarine Arm included service in HMAS Onslow, Otama, Sheean and Farncomb including three operational deployments and multiple national and international exercises. In between these sea postings, he was posted to Headquarters Australian Theatre as an operational planner in domestic and counter terrorism and participated in planning ADF operations in Iraq, Timor, Soloman Islands and Rugby World Cup. After his tenure as Executive Officer HMAS Farncomb (2005-2007), where he was awarded a Chief of Navy’s Commendation for his service, LCDR Doolin worked within Naval Headquarters supporting strategic submarine operations and attended the Special Operations Planning course.
LCDR Doolin assumed Command of the Armidale Class Patrol Boat Crew Aware Two on 10 July 2009, and has since Commanded alternatively HMAS Glenelg and HMAS Maryborough on Operation RESOLUTE Border Protection, maritime surveillance and response patrols and Fleet tasking. In 2009 Aware Two was runner up for the Kelly Shield and Fleet engineering awards recognising Aware Two’s outstanding performance in the Fleet. Aware Two, whilst embarked HMAS Glenelg, conducted a highly successful six week SE Asian and Indian Ocean deployment in early 2010 visiting Singapore, Malaysia, India and the furthest West an ACPB has deployed Colombo, Sri Lanka. Whilst embarked HMAS Maryborough Aware Two conducted the first coordinated maritime security patrol with the Indonesian Navy effectively deploying from Kupang, Indonesia in company with two TNI-AL corvettes for 12 days. Throughout the rest of 2010 Aware Two has conducted uninterrupted operational tasking underway in support of Operation RESOLUTE in the northern waters of Australia.
LCDR Doolin holds a Bachelor of Science (Information Systems and geography) and a Masters of Business Administration (Technology Management) and resides in Darwin, Northern Territory.
