Commanding Officer HMAS Farncomb
Commander Glen Miles, RAN
Commander Glen Andrew Miles, RAN was born in June 1971, and raised in Sydney, NSW. After finishing high school he moved to Tuncurry, NSW and from there joined the Royal Australian Navy as a Direct Entry Midshipman in 1990.
During his Seaman Officer training he was selected to be one of the first two RAN midshipmen to be posted to the Chilean tallship Esmeralda, where he spent seven months as a foremast jack during a return voyage across the South Pacific from Chile.
Upon his return to Australia, he recommenced his training onboard HMAS Swan (III) before gaining his Bridge Watchkeeping Certificate on HMAS Wollongong (II).
In 1993, then-Sub Lieutenant Miles commenced submarine training, gaining his dolphins in November that year on HMAS Ovens. Since that milestone, Commander Miles has served in the submarines Onslow, Otama, Dechaineux, Sheean, Farncomb and Collins. In 1998 he was awarded the Sword of Excellence as dux of the Submarine Warfare Officers Course.
Commander Miles spent two years on the staff of Commander Submarines, U.S. Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbour, Hawaii, where he was extensively involved in weapons development and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. During this time Commander Miles was exceptionally fortunate to become the first RAN officer to participate in the biannual USN Ice Camp in the Arctic.
Commander Miles assumed command of HMAS Farncomb in January 2011. He has twice previously commanded HMAS Collins.
He is a voracious reader of history, recently completing an Archaeology/Ancient History degree, and is currently studying for a Masters degree in Defence Studies.
Commander Miles is married and has a young son and daughter. He enjoys paddling, cycling, and enthusiastically supporting the St George-Illawarra Dragons Rugby League team.
