Commander Todd Andrew Willson, RAN was born and raised in Sydney, Australia. He joined the Navy in 1988 through the Australian Defence Force Academy and graduated in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science in Oceanography. Following seaman officer training, he completed an exchange posting with the Canadian Navy where he was awarded his Bridge Watchkeeping Certificate in 1992 in the Destroyer Escort HMCS Saskatchewan. On return to Australia he was promoted to Lieutenant and consolidated as an Officer of the Watch.

Lieutenant Willson completed Assistant Warfare Officer postings to HMA Ships Brisbane (II) and Sydney. He completed the Principal Warfare Officer (PWO) Course in 1997 specialising in Surface Warfare and Communications before posting to HMAS Brisbane (II) as the Communications Officer. In 1999 he joined the Deployable Joint Force Headquarters Maritime as the Staff Officer Intelligence and deployed to East Timor and the Solomon Islands in this role. He was promoted to Lieutenant Commander in 2002 during his tenure as the Deputy Director Maritime Communications in Maritime Headquarters. Subsequent postings included the Deputy Director Fleet Information Systems Support Organisation and a further exchange posting, this time with the United States Navy at Pacific Command in Hawaii.

Returning to Australia he assumed responsibility for the Headquarters Joint Operations Command Surveillance Watch and was promoted to Commander in 2008. He relocated to Canberra with the headquarters before posting to Navy Strategic Command as the Director Navy Information Warfare.

Commander Willson holds a Graduate Diploma and a Masters of Science in Information Technology. He is married to Christina and has two young sons. He enjoys kite surfing, reading history and playing touch football when the opportunity arises.

CMDR Willson assumed Command of HMAS Kuttabul in January 2012.
