Commander Anthony ‘Jock’ Campbell, RAN was born in Sydney, New South Wales. Educated at Nepean High School, he joined the Royal Australian Navy in January 1989 and is a graduate of the Australian Defence Force Academy, Royal Australian Naval College and the Australian Command and Staff College. At Staff College he was awarded the G.R. Griffiths prize for presentation skills and oral communication during the Navy Single Service component of the course. He holds a Master of Arts (Strategy and Policy), a Graduate Diploma in Defence Studies and a Graduate Certificate in Maritime Studies.

CMDR Campbell is a Principal Warfare Officer with a specialisation in surface warfare. His early years at sea included service in HMA Ships Jervis Bay, Kanimbla, Hobart, Success and Torrens while under training and HMA Ships Torrens and Perth as an Officer of the Watch and Anti-Submarine Air Controller. He later served in HMA Ships Arunta and Newcastle as the Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer. Highlights of these years include North Asia deployments to China and the Republic of Korea in 1997 and 2001 respectively, participation in Rim of the Pacific exercises off Hawaii in 1998 and 2000 and deployment to the North Arabian Gulf as part of United Nations sanctions enforcement against Iraq in 2002. CMDR Campbell served as Commanding Officer of the Fremantle Class Patrol Boat HMAS Bendigo (II) from mid 2004 until late 2005, involved in border protection operations in Northern Australian waters.

CMDR Campbell’s staff postings have included serving as an instructor at the Principle Warfare Officer Faculty, as Head of the Initial Officer Training Faculty at HMAS Creswell and as the Fleet Operations Liaison Officer at Navy Headquarters. In 2002-03 he served as Operations Coordinator within Maritime Headquarters responsible for coordination of the vast range of maritime operations during that period. It was during this posting that CMDR Campbell was awarded a Maritime Commanders Commendation. In 2009 CMDR Campbell served on the staff of the Combined Maritime Forces based in Bahrain as the Assistant Chief of Staff-Plans responsible for the long range planning of Campaigns and Plans to combat maritime terrorism and piracy in the Middle East Area of Operations.

CMDR Campbell’s interests include cycling, squash, swimming and anything to do with his three children who reside in Canberra.

CMDR Campbell assumed command of HMAS Newcastle on 30 July 2010.
