Commander Andrew Fraser Masters, RAN entered the Royal Australian Navy in 1988 as a MIDN to commence training as a Seaman Officer. After initial entry and navigation training he was promoted to SBLT and posted to HMAS Success in early 1990 for award of his Bridge Watchkeeping certificate and consolidation as an Officer of the Watch, during which time Success was deployed to the Arabian Gulf. In 1991 SBLT Masters was posted to the Anti-Submarine Aircraft Controllers course before joining HMAS Canberra where he served as OOW/Boarding Officer during a deployment to the Red Sea in 1992. In late 1993 SBLT Masters gained Air Intercept Controller qualifications before joining HMAS Brisbane.

Promotion to LEUT followed in 1994 and in 1996 LEUT Masters was posted to HMAS Watson to undertake the Principal Warfare Officers’ course. On completion LEUT Masters was posted to HMAS Perth before proceeding on a 2 year exchange posting to the Royal Navy in late 1998 serving in HM Ships Brave and Norfolk and was promoted to LCDR in 2000. On return to Australia in 2001, LCDR Masters was posted to the Directing Staff for the Principal Warfare Officers’ course before being posted to HMAS Darwin as the Executive Officer in 2003. On completion of his tenure as XO, LCDR Masters was then posted to the Australian Command and Staff Course in 2005, and in 2006 was promoted to CMDR and posted to the Air Warfare Destroyer project. In August 2008, CMDR Masters assumed Command of HMAS Stuart (FFH 153).

CMDR Masters holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Strategic Studies, a Masters degree in Management Studies (Project Management), Graduate Diplomas in Management and Information Management and a Graduate Certificate in Maritime Studies. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Project Managers (AIPM) where he holds a Level 6 Master Project Director accreditation.
