Diamantina plays host to aspiring members of the RAN
19 November 2007
After a lengthy period of refit HMAS Diamantina (LCDR D J Griffiths, RAN) has bounced back with flying colours. In addition to the increased tempo of workup preparations, Diamantina's crew has played an important role in increasing awareness amongst younger members of the community through a number of tours held onboard whilst alongside.
On Friday 19th September, almost 50 Australian Air Force Cadets from Sydney's, 35 Squadron, were given a glimpse into life on a warship and what it is like to be part of a Clearance Dive Team.
For two hours the group was rotated between Diamantina and Clearance Dive Team 1 (LCDR E Mulder, RAN). The visit proved to be a huge success, while there were many potential recruits to our comrades at the RAAF, the tour may have been enough to convince a number of them to think twice about which service they sign up for.
A few weeks later, Diamantina once again played host to a group of aspiring members of the ADF. On Thursday 25th October, a mix of 31 students, parents and teaching staff from Rosebank Primary School, Ballina, found out what Navy life is like today.
The school's principal, Mr Richard Fuller and teacher, Mr Jamie Kelly were impressed with the visit and believe it may have sparked interest for a few potential naval careers, not only with the students.
The group was shown through the ship and given a brief overview of the Huon Class Minehunter's countermeasures and capabilities. A demonstration of the ship's weaponry saw eyes light up and the concept of the Mine Disposal Vehicles kept many intrigued.
Overall it has been a rewarding few months for Diamantina, with the successful completion of her MSE, returning to the Fleet and her ongoing involvement with the community. Diamantina's focus is now on her URE period scheduled for late November and returning to the Fleet in full force for a busy 2008.
