Later on today, the Royal Australian Navy Frigate HMAS Melbourne will be awarded the Gloucester Cup by the Governor-General, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC.

The award is Navy’s most prestigious prize and recognises Melbourne’s excellence in capability generation, safety, seamanship, reliability and unit level training during 2010.

The Governor-General, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC, will be joined by Commodore Support, Commodore Andrew Smith, RAN to present the Commanding Officer of HMAS Melbourne, Commander Michael John Harris, RAN with the Gloucester Cup.

Instituted in 1947 by the then Governor-General, the Duke of Gloucester, the Gloucester Cup is awarded to the ship that performs best against a range of performance criteria, including capability generation, safety, seamanship, reliability and training.

Melbourne will also be awarded the Spada Shield which recognises safety, reliability and training.

Melbourne has recently returned from the Middle East Area of Operations where she served with distinction during Operation Slipper and successfully responded to 14 distress calls in relation to suspected piracy attacks.
