HMAS Ararat alongside Rabaul
1 April 2010
On Friday, 26 Mar 10, HMAS Ararat pulled alongside Rabaul, Papua New Guinea after a slow passage from Pohnpei.
Members of ship’s company took some leave and trekked out to explore the different culture and history Rabaul and the neighbouring towns had to offer. Some personnel took time to simply relax at the only hotel in town, whilst others explored the WWII historical sites, visited the local markets and shops, admire the extraordinary and interesting wood carvings, and got closer to the active volcano we glimpsed on the entry into the harbour.
After a last minute stores drop of fresh food, Ararat departed Rabaul yesterday morning for the five day voyage over the north of Queensland and then back to Darwin where we will lose and gain a few members before heading out to provide protection in the Northern Australian waters.
Throughout the last few weeks, the crew of Ararat has embraced an excellent opportunity to travel a small bit of the world, experience different cultures, strengthen international ties and above all, have some fun.
