The Cairns community is invited to get a first hand experience of the Royal Australian Navy during the Navy Week celebrations, 28 September to 4 October 2009, hosted by HMAS Cairns.

Two highlights of Navy week in FNQ will be a Ceremonial Sunset on the Cairns Esplanade on Thursday 1 October 2009 and an Open Day at HMAS Cairns on Sunday 4 October 2009 at which the public can tour a Navy Frigate, Armidale Class Patrol Boat and Landing Craft Heavy, see displays and demonstrations, and be entertained by the RAN Band.

Commanding Officer HMAS Cairns, CMDR Bob Heffey, CSM, RAN, said the ship tours, demonstrations and displays are a great opportunity for the Cairns community to get to know more about your Navy in Far North Queensland.

"HMAS Cairns is proud to be a part of the local Cairns community and the Navy week events are our way of showing our appreciation through public events like the Ceremonial sunset, RAN Band performances and the Open day," said CMDR Heffey.

"The Ceremonial Sunset and Beat to Quarters on Thursday night will show Navy's traditional ceremonial side. Dating back centuries to the age of sail, the Ceremonial Sunset reflects the world wide naval tradition of saluting the lowering of the Ensign at sunset each day," he said.

The Ceremonial Sunset starts at 6 pm in Fogarty Park and will incorporate a Guard from HMAS Cairns firing blank volleys. Before and after the ceremony the RAN Band will give a free performance in the Sound Shell. "Navy appreciates the support of the Cairns Regional Council to Navy in holding this public event," said.

Navy Week celebrations will culminate on Sunday 4 October.

Come and see the 'real' Sea Patrol with HMAS Launceston currently badged as HMAS Hammersley alongside.
