It was with great pride that HMAS Cairns and Cairns Based Fleet units turned to for Ceremonial Divisions on Tue 12 April 2011.

HMAS Cairns’ excellence in operations, safety, security and support to the fleet were recognised when Her Excellency, the Governor of Queensland, Ms Penelope Wensley, AO, presented HMAS Cairns with the coveted Governors Cup for 2010.

It is the second time HMAS Cairns has been awarded the Cup. In 2008, the establishment received the honour for the first time. Receiving the award twice when the Governors Cup was only established in 2007 is a testament of the dedication and hard work displayed by HMAS Cairns members.

The cup was presented to the Executive Officer, HMAS Cairns, Lieutenant Commander Terry Garside, RAN, Chief Petty Officer Dean Faunt and Able Seaman Lani Wade during Ceremonial Divisions. Commander Australian Fleet, Rear Admiral Steve Gilmore, AM, CSC, RAN, attended, and praised all personnel for their outstanding service.

Rear Admiral Gilmore said the Governors Cup symbolised exceptional achievement.

“HMAS Cairns is now at the forefront of our Navy, and has set the standard for excellence” he said.

Addressing the parade, Her Excellency commented on the tremendous efforts of HMAS Cairns and Cairns Based Fleet Units in assisting with the Queensland Flood Relief and the clean up following Tropical Cyclone Yasi which deployed many sailors from different units within HMAS Cairns and the Cairns Based Fleet Units to a variety of locations.

Commanding Officer HMAS Cairns, Commander Wendy Bullen CSM, ADC, RAN said that she was extremely proud of the hard work of the men and women of HMAS Cairns. Bullen said “I would like to pay tribute to Bob Heffey who was Commanding Officer in 2009 and 2010. Without his leadership and drive, we would probably not be standing here today receiving this award.”

Following Ceremonial Divisions, Gilmore held a clear lower deck with all six Landing Craft Heavy (LCH) crews. During this clear lower deck, Gilmore presented the LCH Proficiency Shield to HMAS Wewak for being the LCH foremost in capability generation, safety, reliability and unit level training during 2010. It was with great pride that Commanding Officer Lieutenant Luke Weston, RAN accepted this award on behalf of HMAS Wewak.
