HMAS Melbourne first recipient of internet kiosk

15 Jul 2010

Onboard HMAS Melbourne it was a case of the ‘past’ returning to launch the ‘future’ when Rear Admiral (RADM) Peter Jones DSC, AM, RAN, Head Information & Communications Technology Operations (ICT) and ex-Commanding Officer of Melbourne, unveiled the RAN’s latest lifestyle ICT endeavour, the wireless Internet Kiosk.

Mr John Alexander, Client Director Fujitsu Defence, was also present at the launch. Mr Alexander represented Fujitsu, who designed, built and installed the Internet Kiosk. A happy coincidence of the launch was that Mr Alexander was RADM Jones’ Executive Officer when he held command of Melbourne.

RADM Jones addressed the ship’s company and noted that the Internet Kiosk afforded all the opportunity to keep in touch with family and friends via Facebook, conduct banking at sea and undertake tertiary studies whilst deployed. He thanked Captain (CAPT) Charles McHardie for the efforts of his team in working alongside Fujitsu to deliver the project on time and budget.

Commander Australian Fleet, RADM Steve Gilmore, AM, CSC, RAN, then ceremonially logged on for the first time and declared the at sea Internet Kiosk open for business.
