HMAS Tarakan commissioned at HMAS Moreton under the command of LEUT C.A. Ritchie, RAN. HMAS Tarakan was primarily involved in Army support. In July, 1985 a decision was made by Navy Office to lay up three LCHs in Operational Reserve. HMAS Tarakan was decommissioned from the RAN after 12 years of service. HMAS Tarakan recommissioned in November, 1988 for various LCH duties from Cairns (including naval reserve training).
