HMAS Watson ends the year on a giving note
17 December 2010
The Ships Company of HMAS Watson lead by the Commanding Officer, Captain Jay Bannister, finished the year on a giving note as appropriate for the festive season.
During a hard year of training for the Royal Australian Navy’s Maritime Warfare officers and sailors, Watson Ships Company personnel also worked hard to raise funds for the Sydney Children’s’ Hospital at Randwick, Watson’s ships charity.
Money was raised by collections held during the year and with a special collection during the HMAS Watson and Woollahra Council, ‘Carols on the Bay’ on Saturday 4 December. During this collection an anonymous member of the local community left a $200 gold coin as a Christmas present for the Children’s Hospital.
At a ceremony this week attended by Michelle Drexler from the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Captain Bannister presented the Children’s Hospital with a cheque for $6033.
Captain Bannister said the two programs Watson supports were Camp Go Ahead and Camp Think Ahead.
“Camp Go Ahead is a residential camp where young children with brain injuries can make friends, challenge themselves, participate in group activities, gain some independence and socialise in a supportive group environment,” he said.
“Camp Think Ahead brings young people with similar life experiences together so they can support each other in taking on new information, new experiences and identifying other resources in the community.”
