Harman targets influencers

21 November 2008

One of the aims of the Navy Community Engagement Program NCEP is to improve awareness of the Navy among the Community by establishing a better understanding of the lifestyle and opportunities it has to offer and by directly engaging with people in the Community to help them better understand the Navy's role, values, and lifestyle. The Program also promotes the contribution that Navy makes to the Community.

The NCEP has recently been placing a particularly high priority on conducting Community related activities targeted at assisting Defence Force Recruiting to improve recruiting performance.

In order to promote the Navy to a wide ranging group of community influencers, HMAS Harman, in conjunction with Defence Force Recruiting, hosted a dinner for 35 guests from a diverse range of Political, Educational and Multicultural organisations who were provided the opportunity to talk with members from HMAS Harman and Canberra based Navy directorates and services as well as staff from DFR throughout the dinner. Whilst guests enjoyed the presentation and discussions about the makeup of the service they were especially interested in the various personal stories the Navy officers and sailors had to 'spin'.

Community Dinner guests enjoy a "Warrie" (Navy jargon for a Sailor telling a story about their experiences in the Navy) or two over dinner.

RADM James Goldrick addressed the audience on life in the Navy today whilst CDRE Tim Barrett (Director General Defence Force Recruiting) provided many guests with some idea of the range of opportunities the Navy has to offer.

The NCEP Regional Coordinator in the ACT (WO Des Byrne) said "we have received numerous positive comments and compliments from the attending guests who now have a much better understanding of what Navy life and Navy values are all about". He added that "the conduct of the hosts, and support given by the Harman Command Team were all first class and has contributed to establishing some valued and long lasting community relationships."
