Lieutenant Commander Douglas John Cornish, RANR

LCDR Doug Cornish was born in Melbourne Victoria. He was educated at Bentleigh High School. He joined the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) as an Adult Recruit at HMAS Cerberus in April 1972. As an Ordinary Seaman Naval Aircraft Mechanic Airframe and Engines (Ord NAMAE) he was posted to HMAS Melbourne (II) (Majestic Class Aircraft Carrier) before undertaking Aircraft Technical training at HMAS Albatross. This course and subsequent advanced technical courses were followed by postings to various squadrons at HMAS Albatross and HMAS Melbourne (II) as part of the Carrier Air Group (CAG). Squadron experience included VC851 and VS816 (Grumman S2E & G Trackers) HC723 (Bell UH1B Iroquois, Hawker Siddley HS748 and AS350BA Squirrel aircraft). Additional postings included RAAF Headquarters Support Command in Melbourne and Directorate of Naval Aircraft Engineering in Canberra.

As a Chief Petty Officer (CPOATA) he was awarded Flight Senior Maintenance Sailor charge qualification on 723 Squadron involving numerous deployments to Australian capital cities and South East Asia, providing HS748 EW Training, in support of various exercises. CPO Cornish was commissioned in July 1995 as an Aerospace Engineering Officer after completing tertiary studies in Mechanical Engineering at Canberra Institute of Technology. Postings included the Fleet Aviation Engineering Unit at NAS Nowra, RAN Liaison Officer and AS350BA Squirrel Logistics Manager at Army Aviation Program Office, Oakey QLD. On successful completion and award of his Charge Qualification, he was appointed Senior Maintenance Manager at 723 Squadron followed by the Manager of Technical Training at Training Authority Aviation (TA-AVN).

LCDR Cornish transferred from the RAN to the RANR in July 2005. He has continued to maintain an active interest in the Navy, focusing primarily on training. Full time employment continued as the Head of Naval Reserve Initial Entry Training Team (H-NRIETT) at HMAS Creswell and Senior Naval Officer at RAAF Base Wagga responsible for the Aviation Technical Training management and administration for Navy Aviation Technicians. In March 2009 LCDR Cornish returned to HMAS Creswell as the Head of Management and Strategic Studies (H-MSSF).

LCDR Cornish is married to Karen with three teenage daughters and lives in Nowra. He has a keen interest in outdoor activities including camping, kayaking, fishing (feeding fish) and when time permits, enjoys a game of golf, carpentry and is a one eyed Collingwood supporter.
