Hockey team outclassed

HMAS Melbourne (CMDR Mick Harris) recently conducted a four-day visit to Muscat, Oman in order to embark stores, conduct maintenance and provide the crew with some much needed respite between long operational patrols.
Between hosting a formal visit by Commander JTF 633, MAJGEN John Cantwell, AO, and experiencing the hospitality of the locals, the ship’s company was invited to participate in a game of field hockey.
Expecting to be sized up against a local team of similar talent, the Melbourne team was slightly surprised to find itself playing against the Omani National team – made up primarily of players who had recently tasted success in the under 21 Asian Cup Championships.
Aptly led by LSET Nick Schiavo and LSWTR Marcus Parkinson, and including a number of former state and ADF representative players, the team didn’t take the opportunity lightly and, while soundly beaten, was in no way disgraced.
The efforts of the team in sapping conditions received considerable praise from the opposition.
Rightfully pleased with their performance, the Melbourne side walked away having had a fantastic evening and having enjoyed a game played in great spirit on both sides. The event served to build on an already successful port visit and further enhanced the positive relationship that exists between the two countries.
