Letter of Gratitude to HMAS Melbourne

10 January 2011

The following letter of gratitude was sent by Claus-Peter Offen, the ship operator of the CPO China, to the Commanding Officer, HMAS Melbourne. CPO China was recently assisted by HMAS Melbourne on 3 January 2011 to thwart a pirate attack. The letter reads:

Commander Michael John Harris
Master HMAS Melbourne
Royal Australian Navy

Dear Sir,

Please allow me to express my sincere gratitude for the action you and the entire crew of HMAS Melbourne have taken to save my vessel CPO China from a pirate assault.

I say this also in the name of all members of Offen-Tankers, the crew of the CPO China and their kinsmen.

We know this incident could have had a disastrous outcome. Your prompt and swift reaction to the distress call of the ship was a great relief to all people on board the CPO China and the shore staff involved.

It is reassuring to experience once again that the brotherhood of sea is still a strong bond among civilized nations and goes way beyond just fulfilling duties.

More than 100 ships fly the Offen-flag and a number of them call Australian ports on a regular basis. In the past a number of these ships were involved actively in rescue operations also in Australian waters.

It is good to know that help is available when for a chance help is needed.

Most sincerely

Claus-Peter Offen
