The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) maintains a significant presence in South Queensland through its Navy Headquarters situated at Bulimba on the Brisbane River. Although there are no ships or commissioned establishments in Brisbane there is a high level of naval activity in and around South Queensland.
Navy Headquarters – South Queensland (NHQ-SQ) is the focal point of naval activity in South Queensland and supports RAN personnel who serve in the area of jurisdiction including: the Australian Defence Force Recruiting Unit, Edward Street in the city; the Deployable Joint Force Headquarters at Enoggera; and the School of Army Education (those studying at the undergraduate and postgraduate level at tertiary institutions in Brisbane) at Enoggera. The RAN also has students and instructors at the following establishments: the Defence Force School of Signals - Electronic Warfare Wing, Cabarlah (north of Toowoomba), the Army Aviation Centre Oakey (west of Toowoomba) and at the School of Military Intelligence at Canungra (near the Gold Coast).
NHQ-SQ is located at Bulimba Barracks, Apollo Road, Bulimba. This Headquarters was established in May 1994 as a result of the closure of HMAS Moreton.
NHQ-SQ is formally responsible for the coordination and administration of all RAN activity in Queensland south of the Tropic of Capricorn (near Rockhampton) including the organisation of ship visits by RAN and foreign naval vessels to Brisbane, Gladstone and Southport. NHQ-SQ also hosts visiting Minor War Vessels at the Navy’s wharf at Bulimba including Armidale Class Patrol Boats, Landing Craft Heavy (LCH’s), as well as Coastal Minehunters.
NHQ-SQ includes the highly respected Queensland detachment of the Royal Australian Navy Band, Australian Naval Reserve Dive Team Eight, and Australian Naval Cadet Headquarters as lodgers and administers a large number of RANR personnel who work throughout the Fleet during operational taskings. NHQ-SQ also provides authority and support to the nineteen Naval Cadet Units throughout Queensland.
