Naval College Divisions

The Divisions

New Entry trainees are allocated to one of five divisions on joining the RANC for the purposes of administration, class programming and sporting competitions.

Bass Division

Bass Division

Bass Division is named after George Bass (1771-1803) who explored the East Coast of Australia, together with Matthew Flinders. Bass Division is one of the five divisions here at the RANC. Its colours are black on a white background, with their logo being that of the Jolly Roger.

Cook Division

Cook division is named after James Cook (1728-1779) who in 1770, claimed for Great Britain the eastern coast of Australia. Cook division's colour is red and their mascot is a Red Devil.

Flinders Division

Flinders Division

Flinders division is named after Matthew Flinders (1774-1814). He was the first man to circumnavigate Australia, and was in fact the man who suggested the name Australia, which was adopted in 1824. Flinders division's colour is yellow and their mascot is Matthew Flinders Cat. (Who was called ‘Trim’)

Jervis Division

Jervis division is named after John Jervis, 1st Earl of St Vincent (1735- 1823). He had a highly distinguished career, which included him being the Commander-in-chief of the British Mediterranean Fleet from 1796 to 1799, with his eventual retirement as First Lord of the Admiralty in 1811. In 1821 he was conferred the rank of Admiral of the Fleet on the coronation of George IV. Jervis division's colour is blue and their mascot is a Blue Shark.

Phillip Division

Philip Division

Phillip division is named after Arthur Phillip (1738-1814). He was the first governor of New South Wales and was appointed to the position in 1786. In the year of his death he was made up as an Admiral of the Blue. Phillip division's colour is green and their mascot is a green

dragon.
