One of the oldest and most popular service sports is Cricket. Whether played out the back during lunchtime, or at a Combined Service level, it attracts keen interest and represents the Australian spirit of 'getting out there and having a go'. Even the occasional cricket supporter becomes patriotic when Australia plays England for 'The Ashes'.
Although we don't play for 'The Ashes', Navy Cricket's sense of competition is just as keen, especially at the inter-service level. In 1986, the Australian Services Cricket Association (ASCA) was formed, by LEUT Colonel Dennis Byrne (retired), to allow Service personnel to represent the Defence Force at a national level.
This Association has the responsibility for conducting Inter-Service cricket at a national level, hosting tours by other nations' Defence Force Combined Service cricket teams and coordinating such tours to other countries.
Trials are held in November annually for rep teams.
