Whilst the Navy Hockey Association itself is relatively new, Navy personnel have been playing hockey, representing their ship, the Navy and the Australian Defence Force, for a number of years.

Championships

Navy Hockey competes on five levels:

  • The Jubilee Shield;
  • State-based Interservice Competitions;
  • Participation at the Australian Defence Force Championships;
  • Participation with the Australian Defence Force squad at the Australian National Country Championships; and
  • Matches with visiting Foreign Military sides

The Jubilee Shield is usually held each year in March and provides Ships, Establishments and Commands with the opportunity to compete for team titles and trophies.

Interservice competitions are held each year within each state, competing against the other two services.

Navy personnel participate in both the annual Australian Defence Force Championships, playing for their state combined squad, and at the Australian National Country Championships, representing the Australian Defence Force.

Visiting Foreign Military sides provide an excellent opportunity for a Navy Hockey side to compete at a high level. 2005 saw the UK Army women tour Australia, with a match against the first National Navy Women’s Hockey Team at Sydney Olympic Park.

Membership

The Navy Hockey Association (NHA) was formed in 1994 and is open to any personnel who wish to join.
