Navy People: A great way to see the world

18 October 2010

In August 2009 Meghan Cogdon, then 18, said goodbye to her parents, kindy teacher Margaret and sparkie Peter, and set off for a Gap experience with a difference. Meghan was spending the next year of her life with the Navy.

“Our Lady of Mercy College had a transition day, showing our Gap Year options,” said Meghan.

“I wasn’t sure what to do at uni, but I did want to get some travelling done and I did want to do something worthwhile, not just waste my time.

“Now my year is up. I’ve met excellent people from all over Australia and I got some travel in too. I started with five months at HMAS Cerberus in Victoria, then four months in Cairns aboard a survey vessel.

“We went down to the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsundays — a great way to see the world and get paid too!

“Now I’ve spent the last three months at the Navy’s Fleet Air Arm base at Nowra, on the coast just south of Woollongong.

“Next on my personal agenda is Europe and then university. After that, who knows?” said Meghan.

“Even if you are not staying in, it’s worth having a go. We have all learnt so much about ourselves, and I have set myself up for uni too.”

“And wherever I go in future, there will always be someone’s couch to crash on!”
