Elliot left home to seek career opportunities and joined the Navy in 2009 at age 20.

After completing recruit school he remained at HMAS Cerberus in Victoria to undertake his twelve month initial employment training in order to become an Electronic Technician. Elliot’s passion for Rugby League continued throughout his time at Cerberus, with his team taking out the Rugby 10’s competition as the Third Division Premiers in 2009.

Elliot’s first sea posting is to replenishment ship HMAS Success where he maintain the ships radar and communications systems.

“My job involves a lot of technical work with my hands, which is great, as that’s what I love to do,” said Elliot. “While my job has some challenges, the teamwork and mates I have made since joining the Navy, make my job enjoyable. I also get the chance to expand my skills.”

Elliot enjoys learning about all facets of the electronic technician’s trade, from working on the gyroscope and radars to ensure that the ships navigation systems are serviceable to the sound powered circuits to ensure the ships emergency communications systems can be used.

“Being in the Navy has also given me the chance travel around the country and to places in the world I might never have seen. Since joining Success, I have been to Makassar Indonesia, Port Klang and Kuala Lumpur Malaysia and Singapore.”

“I particularly like Singapore as it’s clean, easy to get around, friendly and the weather reminds me of home,” he said.

Elliot’s goals for the future include finishing his competency log and being posted as a member of the commissioning crew for one the Navy’s new LHDs.
