Navy People: Biloela’s Navy medic

Biloela girl Samone Black, 25, is now a Royal Australian Navy medic and been promoted to Able Seaman. Her job is taking care of the sick and injured, both on land and out at sea, but she still loves coming home for a surf.

When she is not on a Navy ship, Samone is working at the Royal Australian Navy College at HMAS Creswell in NSW, providing emergency responses, preventative health, outpatients support, first aid and medical training.

“I love my job! I have done so many great things. I’ve sailed to and worked in some amazing places like Hawaii, Guam, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and Cambodia,” Samone said.

“I even get to provide medical support at Australian Defence Force sporting events when I’m home in Australia.”

The former Biloela State High School student is also studying distance education at the Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga NSW.

“Studying while being in the Navy works really well for me. I study in my free time and I can even sit my exams when I am at sea.”

“The Navy is even helping me pay for my uni degree.”

Having been at HMAS Creswell for 6 months now, Samone was on hand to help the 77 new officers graduated from the Royal Australian Naval College on the 4th December 2009.

“I was there to catch them if they fainted!’

HMAS Creswell in Jervis Bay, NSW is the home of the Navy College, where men and women come together to learn, train and develop into the future leaders of the Royal Australian Navy.

Samone is looking forward to returning to Biloela and seeing her grandparents, Daryl and Jean Hirning.

“When I get home, I will be going for a surf, catching up with my family and friends, and I will definitely be sleeping in!”
