Woodbine’s Amanda Parker is now earning her living in tropical north Queensland but she’s working hard for it.

The former student at the Performing Arts School is now a qualified medic and part of the Navy’s medical team at the Navy shore-base HMAS Cairns.

“I saw an ad on television and knew I wanted a different career. This job offered me on the job training and you get paid for it! It also gives me the options to go places.

“I didn’t need any previous qualifications and the recruiting process was quite easy and fast. The training was challenging and has given me many problem solving abilities which I use in my job every day.

Amanda joined the Royal Australian Navy in September 2004. She completed her core Navy training at HMAS Cerberus (just outside Melbourne) before going on to medical training.

“I have seen all parts of Australia and have even given support to SAS Soldiers during the Commonwealth Games. In 2007, I had the opportunity to go on the ‘North East Asian Deployment’ which took me to areas in Asia and Russia.

“Recently I returned from ‘Northern Trident’, a round-the-world trip where I was able to visit ports in Western Europe, North America and West and North Asia. These are lifetime experiences !”

“And you always feel a part of the team, even if it’s during your lunch break!”
