Navy People: Countering piracy on the high seas
20 October 2009
Miners Rest's Brendon Peters, 20, is heading home after six months on anti-piracy patrol off the Horn of Africa. He and his 180 shipmates aboard HMAS Stuart will come ashore in Australia towards the end of April.
Brendon joined the Navy in March 2008 and has specialised as a combat systems operator. He has the rank of Seaman.
“On board HMAS Stuart I am an Action Picture Supervisor, working within the operations room of HMAS Stuart,” Brendon said.
“I operate and man radars, sonars and external voice circuits [ship’s loudspeakers].”
“Highlights for the deployment include visiting areas which I never imagined I would have travelled, and getting to know my ship mates even better,” he said.
Brendon's mates at the Ballarat High School Rowing Club would never have guessed that just two years after graduating from school he would be riding the ocean wave in far-off exotic locations.
“Now I’m looking forward to getting back and seeing my family and friends,” said Brendon.
