Navy People: Electronic Warrior
1 December 2010
Frankston’s Clive Budd is a bit of a computer buff as well as a muso, and his wife Judy Leatham is a nurse in an aged care facility.
Now their son Nick Budd, 23, has taken family computer skills to the next level — he has become one of the Navy’s electronic warriors.
It wasn’t always so. After Monterey Secondary College, Nick dropped out of TAFE and then worked for a year in a carpet warehouse in Melbourne.
“I’d always thought of Defence but I was too unfit,” said Nick. “Then the Skye AFL footy club and manual labouring at the warehouse finally got me up to the right weight!
“After basic training at HMAS Cerberus I specialised as a cryptological linguist. My job aboard ship will be to defend the ship from electronic attack.
“Now I’m getting ready to go to sea at last — hopefully later this year.
“You certainly wouldn’t experience this in the outside world and, in the Navy, you are all chucked in together which fosters a lot of new friendships.
“I’m still managing to get home every few months — and I still look forward to that first beer at Flanagans.”
