Navy People: From Home town girl to Navy Hockey Star
3 December 2010
Kirsten Wilson was an avid member of the Wavell Hockey Club when she was growing up in Bald Hills, Queensland… three years later she now plays Hockey for the Navy and travels the world in warships.
After graduating from Grace Lutheran College in 2007 Kirsten joined the Navy in May, 2008. Since then she has graduated from Recruit School at HMAS Cerberus, and completed her initial cook training where she gained Certificates II and III in cookery. Currently an Able Seaman posted to HMAS Success, Kirsten cooks for a crew of 220 on a daily basis.
“One of the best things about my job is meeting new people and working with my friends in a fun and friendly environment,” said Kirsten.
“I know the name of everyone onboard, and it’s great when I get feedback that they love the meals I make for them.”
The crew of Success not only enjoy Kirsten’s positive and enthusiastic attitude when she serves them on the line but they also like her artistic ability. Her artistry on the menu board shows her creative flair, and Kirsten makes every meal option sound exciting, as well as looking and tasting delicious.
“Since I joined the Navy, I’ve had a chance to do plenty of travel and help the community. So far I’ve been to Papua New Guinea, Singapore and Sumatra, Indonesia to help with the ‘Sumatra Assist’ Tsunami relief effort,” said Kirsten.
“I’ve also spent time in plenty of Malaysian ports including Kota Kinabalu, Port Klang and Kuala Lumpur. Being a cook, one of the highlights of travel for me is tasting the different local cuisines.”
“My goal is to keep travelling with the Navy while I gain my Diploma in cookery, and progress in my cooking career,” said Kirsten.
Apart from travel, my other career highlight was being selected for the 2009 and 2010 ADF National Hockey Team. This year we came 3rd at the Australian Country Championships and I received a commendation.”
