When 46 year old Harry Katsanevas decided to embark on a sea change, he really took note of the ‘sea’ in change.

Harry has just completed his initial training in the navy as a New Entry Officer, graduating on 2 December 2010 from the Royal Australian Naval College, HMAS Creswell, Jervis Bay.

His new life as an officer in the navy has taken a bit of a turn from his life as a Shop owner in Canberra.

“I sold my business after 15 years and was too young to retire so I thought, ‘what do you want to do?’

I was going to the agents at Woden Plaza to list the business for sale and I noticed a Defence Force Recruiting building on the corner and I thought I would go in and have a look.

I spoke with a recruiter and he explained the different types of jobs that there were, I applied and here I am now, about to begin a career as a Maritime Warfare Officer!”

“I have really enjoyed the training at Jervis Bay; it’s such a beautiful area. My children Brock (14), Sophie (12) and Jaime (11) are in Canberra and I have been able to see them a few times and I have been able to visit my father, Les Katsanevas, in Brawley on a few occasions.

“For our Sea Training Deployment we all got to go to New Zealand and embark on the New Zealand ship, HMNZS Canterbury, which was a fantastic experience. I even got a drive of the ship. It was such a great opportunity to be able to work with the New Zealand crew and learn how their ships function.

“I am really looking forward to more travel opportunities with the navy, making new friends and meeting new people.”

After a well earned break over Christmas, Harry will begin his training as a Maritime Warfare Officer at HMAS Watson, Watsons Bay, Sydney. As a trainee Maritime Warfare Officer, Harry will learn how to navigate a ship and manage the bridge team as the Commanding Officer’s representative.
