Navy People: Interest in Aviation
13 December 2010
After graduating from Werribee Secondary College in 2003, Lee Howard began working in the entertainment industry as a cameraman and editor – but now he’s got a job that could travel the world.
It began in 2005 when he met a now good friend who used to be an army pilot in Vietnam. This sparked his interest in aviation and on 2 December, Lee graduated from an initial five months of officer training at the Royal Australian Naval College, HMAS Creswell, Jervis Bay. He’s now to begin training as a Aviation Warfare Officer
The New Entry Officer Course Lee has just graduated from, gives all new officers in the navy the fundamental qualifications and experience they will need to enter the fleet as junior leaders and managers.
For the five months of initial training, Lee has experienced a wide variety of training in everything from survival at sea to boat work, leak stop and repair, firefighting and weapons training, drill and ceremonial.
“Our training also involved various types of leadership exercises such as Exercise Matapan, where we worked out-field for a number of days. We have been trained how to manage teams of people using our own leadership styles to achieve goals,” Lee said.
“I have also been able to travel to New Zealand for Sea Training Deployment and embark in HMNZS Canterbury. It was such a great experience to be able to work with the New Zealand crew and learn how their ships operate.
“I was quite proud to graduate from the New Entry Officer Course. I have really enjoyed my time training at HMAS Creswell, but now I am looking forward to beginning my training as an Aviation Warfare Officer. The training is quite involved and will take about four to five years.”
Over the next few years of his training, Lee will cover navigation training, aviation training and computer navigation systems, weapons, meteorology, air traffic control, communications, search and rescue and warfare.
Lee will be heading back home to Werribee for the Christmas break to spend some time with family and friends.
