Local man Lenny Evans is in construction these days, but in the 1970s he was in the Navy, long before he married golf club CEO Linda.

Now their daughter Elise, 22, is following her Dad’s footsteps. She’s in Navy uniform herself.

“Dad always said the Navy got his life started, and he wanted the same for me,” said Elise.

“He said it was the best way to get a good life without a uni degree.”

“That’s why, right after Sussex Inlet Public School, I was doing Navy basic training at HMAS Cerberus near Melbourne.

“I’ve specialised as a linguist, part of the Navy’s intelligence service,” said Elise. “It took me two-and-a-half years to get trained but it’s been brilliant. I encourage any Gen Y to try it!

“I’ve met loads of people and now I’m married to another Navy linguist, Adam Coward. Talk about keeping things in the family. The Navy’s now helping him financially with his uni degree in security and counter-terrorism.

“We’re both looking forward to some sea-time soon, hopefully next year. It could be anywhere — and we maybe won’t know until only a few days beforehand.

“We’d like children eventually, but for the moment going to sea is our top priority — followed by promotion, and then having kids after that.”
