Imagine the pressure of ‘Master Chef’’ then times it by the job of feeding over 150 mouths per sitting using a restricted kitchen at sea in all weathers.

This is the daily challenge of Able Seaman Cook (ABCK) Caroline Stace.

A graduate of Year 11 from St Josephs College, Umina, Caroline joined the Navy two years ago and specialised as a cook. She’s now been promoted to Able Seaman, and a recent menu involved the most enormous nasi goring ever seen.

She did all of this aboard frigate [[HMAS Warramunga|HMAS Warramunga, on its way home after a four-month deployment to Hawaii, Darwin, South Korea and China.

It’s a long way from Qingdao in southern China to an Ettalong Beach café where she used to work.

“I travelled a bit before I joined, but this deployment has been fantastic. It’s been long, but I did get to see the Great Wall of China,” said Caroline.

Caroline’s father was in the British Royal Navy but in the end she made up her own mind about her future life.

Caroline and her 150 shipmates also exercised with the Chinese Navy, including search and rescue, and a live fire exercise off the coast of Qingdao using the ship’s 5 inch gun.

It was a first time a western ship was invited to participate in a live fire activity alongside the Chinese Navy.

HMAS Warramunga is now home after four months away.
