Just a few years ago Peter Greg was playing his heart out on the sports fields of Burnside State High School.

Now he’s a gunnery expert aboard the Navy landing craft HMAS Labuan and, for the next few weeks, he’s in Papua New Guinea as part of Pacific Partnership 2010, a US-led international humanitarian mission.

Peter and his ship-mates are currently in the Rabaul region helping to bring medical and dental care to the people of North Maluku.

“HMAS Labuan is helping bring medical help to the locals,” said Peter.

“It is great that we get to meet them and I feel satisfied that they are getting some assistance because we are here.

“I like that I get to travel to unusual places and meet interesting people, and this deployment we have been to some pretty cool places like the Spice Islands and East Timor.”

“As a Boatswain’s mate my normal job is to manage the ammunition and gunnery onboard. I also take part in anchoring and berthing the ship,” Peter said.

This is not Peter’s first overseas deployment.

“My last deployment was to the South West Pacific. I think it’s great we get to work with other Navies and see their countries. The Pacific Islands are beautiful and I am sure I will be back in the future, we travel so regularly,” he said.

Both Peter’s father, Ron and his uncle Ken were in the Navy for over 20 years, but now Peter has some tales of his own to tell.

“It’s great that I can share stories with my Dad about our experiences. I am looking forward to seeing him again after this deployment for a catch-up,” he said.
