Following her graduation from Heatley Secondary College, Claire Summers received some advice that changed her life.

“My brother-in-law was a soldier working with logistics and he recommended the job,” Claire said.

“Instead I chose to join the Navy but as a stores specialist like he suggested. I wanted to enhance my life experience and see the world, and I am definitely on the way.”

A recent deployment to Papua New Guinea saw Claire taking part in Pacific Partnership, the annual US-led humanitarian assistance mission.

“It was so rewarding to be involved,” said Claire, who is an Able Seaman onboard HMAS Tobruk. “My friends at home are really jealous when I tell them stories of my time in PNG.”

Part of the trip included visiting a school to play sports and give the students footballs and stationery packs.

“They also put on a cultural show – it was eye-opening,” Claire said. “They sang a traditional song and then showed us traditional ceremonies, something I have never seen before.”

Claire’s humanitarian work experience was definitely a positive one.

“The people are always smiling and really friendly. They were grateful for our presence and it really made me feel proud to be there.”

Claire says her role onboard the ship is challenging, but it comes with rewards.

“Aboard ship I order engineering parts and conduct stocktake,” Claire said. “It is great to see a part being fitted into the engine and know that I played a role in that.”

“I have seen so many different places,” Claire said. “I’ve been surveying the Torres Strait in a hydrographic ship — the small crew made for a really good lifestyle.”

“I will head back to Townsville for Christmas I am really looking forward to meeting my brand-new nephew and relaxing with family and friends.”
