Navy People: Off on pirate patrol
15 March 2010
Roxby boy Andrew Reed is now heading for pirate patrol in the Gulf of Aden aboard HMAS Parramatta, but believes the support of his family and friends back home make him even more ready for the job.
“Overseas deployments are difficult enough,” Andrew said. “But I know I can concentrate on the job because I have the full support of everyone back home.”
Andrew is now an Able Seaman and he’s specialised as a marine technician. He and his shipmates sailed from Sydney on 15 March aboard the 3600 tonne Anzac Class Frigate, and expect to be away for six months. It’s part of Australia’s ongoing commitment against terrorism and piracy.
“As a part of my job, I look after everything from the main propulsion systems to the fresh water supply onboard,” said Andrew. “Getting the promotion involved quite a lot of study and long periods of concentration, but it is a very rewarding career option.”
“It can be challenging leaving home for months, but the social atmosphere is extremely positive amongst the techos. We all get in and help each other out when it comes to the crunch,” said Andrew.
“I feel that our techo team has really helped me settle in and we will have a bit of fun whilst we’re on this deployment.”
“My job also gives me civilian recognised trade qualifications. It’s a great way to spend your day knowing that you’re doing something worthwhile for your country — and getting skilled up at the same time!”
