Tamworth’s Damien Burrows, 27, is now patrolling Persian Gulf waters aboard Navy frigate HMAS Stuart. He and his 180 shipmates are safeguarding two key Iraqi oil terminals that bring in 80% of the country’s income, and chasing down contraband runners in the northern Gulf waters.

Now promoted to Able Seaman, Damien has specialised as Combat Systems Operator. “I track ships and liaise with other coalition vessels, creating a tactical picture for the commander to work from.”

Damien joined the Navy four years ago and this is his second deployment to the Middle East — and he is noticing the improvements. “There is still a high threat, but it’s definitely become a little bit quieter - not as intense like the first time I was here”, he said.

Working closely with members from the other coalition ships has been an amazing experience. “I’ve had the chance to work with British and American sailors on this deployment. I find the British Navy is more similar to ours than the American one, but they’re both very professional.

“I was bored with my civilian job in technical sales for a ball bearing company — I chose the Navy to do something different and to have a bit of a change. Now I’ve gotten to travel to places I wouldn’t have thought of visiting”, the Able Seaman said

“But it’ll be good to get back to see everyone”, he said.

Damien is one of approximately 1000 men and women serving with Operation Catalyst, the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) contribution to the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Iraq.

Working with the Iraqi Government, the ADF continues to contribute to Multi-National Force efforts to develop a secure and stable environment in Iraq, and assist national recovery programs.
