Navy People: School really prepared me for the Navy

Former Claremont College student Nikita Chivers, a trainee Navy marine technician, is currently on the Navy’s landing ship HMAS Tobruk for two months as part of her Navy training.
Nikita, 19, said Claremont College ran a special program to help students prepare for entry into the Australian Defence Force.
“The program allows students to visit ships and barracks,” she said. “There’s even a fitness program, and about 40 per cent of the participants get into the ADF.”
“My work onboard the ship involved fixing any domestic electrical faults, such as lighting, fridges, and switchboards, and maintaining the diesel engines.
“I should be fully qualified in the next six to 12 months,” she said. “It’s pretty good because I get to travel the world while I am learning a trade.”
Nikita has already been to Dili (East Timor), Port Moresby (PNG), Surabaya (Indonesia), Singapore, and Kuantan (Malaysia) with the Navy.
And her talents don’t stop at the electrical workshop – she is also an accomplished soccer player, singer, and artist.
Nikita played soccer for Tasmania in the under 16s and in the Tasmanian open women’s leagues.
“I played for Tasmania in the state final but unfortunately we lost to Queensland,” she said.
The karaoke singer is also training up for a special event. “I’m thinking about getting lessons when I get back so I can sing at my dad’s wedding at the end of the year – my dad’s my hero,” she said.
