Navy People: Secure job with good career progression
15 December 2010
20 year old Deloraine local Kristy Ann Youd is about to start a new life that could lead her to commanding her own warship one day.
Kristy Ann has just graduated from the Royal Australian Naval College located at HMAS Creswell, ready to start the next part of her training as a Maritime Warfare Officer.
“My main motivation for joining was to have a secure job with good career progression,” Kristy Ann said.
“I applied in 2008, straight from Launceston College, where I completed year 12 and it was suggested that I spend a bit of time gaining some leadership and management skills. I completed some leadership and management courses and started volunteering with the local council and Girl Guides. I worked on a few projects with the Meander Valley Council and I am hoping to be able to continue that work when I have some time off from the navy.”
While Kristy Ann has been at HMAS Creswell, she has been able to gain experience in everything from survival at sea to boat work, leak stop and repair and firefighting.
“The best thing about the training is the variety of training. Being able to do something different every day keeps the job interesting. I wouldn’t like to be stuck at a desk all day long.
“I had the opportunity to travel to New Zealand to embark in HMNZS Canterbury. It was such a great experience to be able to work with the New Zealand crew and learn how their ships operate. Also, it was the first time that I had been to sea, which was a great experience.
“Our training also involved leadership exercises and activities, which is the basis of our officer training at Creswell. We were taught how to manage teams of people using our own leadership styles to achieve set tasks,” Kristy Ann said.
At the beginning of 2011, Kristy Ann will begin her training as a Maritime Warfare Officer at HMAS Watson, Watsons Bay, Sydney. As a trainee Maritime Warfare Officer, Kristy Ann will learn how to navigate a ship and manage the bridge team as the Commanding Officer’s representative.
“I would really like to look into working in a submarine. It’s a pretty specialist occupation and I think it would be very interesting.”
Kristy Ann is looking forward to a well earned break in Deloraine over Christmas spending time with her family, friends and new fiancée.
